IMD forecast: rainfall expected in Bengal and Northeast; dense fog and cold wave predicted in parts of India

Himachal Pradesh witnessed the closure of over 470 roads, including four national highways, due to snowfall and rain in various parts of the state. The adverse weather conditions have led to transportation disruptions, affecting travel across the region.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported a cyclonic circulation over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and its surrounding areas, predicting light to moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall and snowfall over Arunachal Pradesh. However, the IMD also mentioned that no significant weather events are expected across the country over the next five days.

Forecast for various regions

According to the IMD, isolated to scattered rainfall is anticipated in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura on February 6 and 7. Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand may also experience rainfall on February 6.

Thunderstorm activity is expected in isolated areas of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, and Nagaland on February 6. Additionally, north Peninsular India might witness isolated to scattered light rainfall activity during February 9-11 due to a trough over Peninsular India.

Dense fog and cold wave alerts

Dense fog conditions are likely in isolated pockets of north Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, and Odisha on February 7. Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura may experience dense fog on February 8-9.

Furthermore, minimum temperatures are expected to drop by 2-3°C over many parts of Northwest, East, and Central India in the next three days, with isolated cold wave conditions likely in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi on February 6-7.

Delhi experienced a cold morning with a minimum temperature of 7°C, two degrees below the usual for this time of year. Dense fog was observed in some areas, affecting visibility. The weather forecast predicted moderate fog throughout the day, with the maximum temperature expected to reach around 20°C. The city's air quality was classified as 'moderate' according to the Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 147 at 9 am.
